Designer Breeds
I have never understood the claims of the “Designer Breeds” being hypoallergenic. I am not a scientist by any means but I do have a slight understanding of genetics. Just recently on one of the grooming boards I belong to there was a great discussion on such breeds and the huge amounts of money people are spending for them.
An article was posted to read that explained how the first person to breed a Labradoodle came to his decision and how he regrets it. This is a great article especially if you are looking at one of these “Designer Breeds.” http://www.examiner.com/article/labradoodle-creator-s-regrets-says-inventing-designer-dog-may-have-been-a-disaster
This article specifically says what I have always told owners and expectant owners of such breeds. They can’t be all hypoallergenic it is genetically impossible unless the person breeding has been doing so for generations and lots of testing, which we all know they haven’t. Which is also why these “designer Breeds” will never become breeds, in my lifetime anyway! People are doing this to make money because for what ever reason people are willing to spend thousands of dollars for a mixed breed dog. Which I will talk about more in a bit!!! With genetics (again my minimal understanding) if you breed a dog that is shedding and produces allergens and a dog who does not you will not have every puppy be hypoallergenic. You may get one, you get none. What you also get is some of these puppies with disaster combination coats. Despite what these breeders tell you these dogs need to be groomed on a regular basis. If you like the longer looking coat they need to be brushed daily and brought to a groomer on a 4-8 week rotation to keep them looking this way. If you wait they will get matted and will need to be shaved down.
Back to the outrageous costs people are paying for these mixed breeds. Please do your homework. You don’t need to spend that kind of money on a mixed breed. If you really like these dogs I won’t talk you out of one but they are not purebreds do not pay purebred money. The only thing you want to make sure of is that these puppies parents don’t have any genetic health issues or any temperament issues. These dogs don’t have “true” registration papers, don’t let people pull one over on you. Read up on AKC and what they do and what sets them apart. A better idea if you really like the scruffy type dog check your local shelter, there are always good dogs looking for good home!!!! Rescue, Rescue, Rescue!!!!
I hope this helps some of you out there. Read the link to the article above; it is a real eyeopener!!!!
